Overview:
Change your uncertainty, change your calibration world. This course explores the modern calibration concept of Test Uncertainty, the measurement uncertainty in the calibration and conformity assessment of measuring instruments. When testing measuring instruments in calibration, and assessing conformity to specification (pass/fail statements), handling the impact of measurement uncertainty in decision rules can be a challenging problem. Powerful concepts from recent national and international standards have exposed weaknesses in historical approaches to measurement uncertainty, and this class will show you how to implement the test uncertainty principles in these standards to improve your measurement uncertainty.

This course is taught by Dr. Jim Salsbury, the author of the book “Test Uncertainty: Guide to the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in the conformity assessment of measuring instruments”. Dr. Salsbury had a front row seat in the standards committees working on the principles of test uncertainty since the early 2000’s, and he brings that experience and history to this course and the accompanying book. Included with the course registration is access to complementary online eLearning content and an electronic copy of Dr. Salsbury’s book.

Prerequisites:
There are no complicated mathematics in this class, but students should have prior background in evaluating measurement uncertainty in the calibration of measuring instruments. This course uses examples from the field of dimensional calibration, but the concepts apply to all calibration fields and no experience in dimensional calibration is required.

Course Materials:
The course materials include extensive photographs and descriptions based on the book “Test Uncertainty:  Guide to the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in the conformity assessment of measuring instruments”.

Certificate
Participants will earn an Attendance Certificate from Mitutoyo America Corporation.
